River Rafting – Top places around India

One of my favorite rafting destinations is Rishikesh which is in Uttarakhand, it promises a great experience and should always be added to your itinerary without hesitation.

There are many rafting spots in India itself, a few of them are mentioned below:

1. River Ganga at Rishikesh

Rishikesh has become very famous for adventure sport as it is one of the most visited and spectacular spots for white water river rafting in India. Rishikesh is located in Garhwal Himalaya in Uttarakhand. Amidst these stretches, you will experience Rapids from Grade I to Grade IV. There are 13 rapids and some of them have unusual names like – The Wall (which falls between the Kaudiyala and Marine Drive stretch and is most difficult of all), Roller Coaster (falls between the Marine Drive and Rishikesh stretch). The other exhilarating rapids include Three Blind Mice, Return to Sender, Golf Course, and Double Trouble. While going through these grades you have a lot of fun and the best ever experience. While passing through these stretches, you can enjoy the serenity of mountains and the splendor of the white sand beaches around you. The best time of the year to indulge in river rafting at Rishikesh is from June to September.

2. Kundalika River at Kolad, Maharashtra

Kundalika river serves as a hotspot for rafting in Western India. Kolad is the most and most visited destination during the monsoon by many tourists. It is a very small river that flows from the Sahyadri Hills to the Arabian sea. It is also one of the best weekend getaways in the region. It is the only place in India that offers the most thrilling and adventurous white water river rafting throughout the year. The approximate 15 km stretch provides various rapids between 3 and 4. The scenic beauty of the surroundings is splendid and the lush green flora around makes it an attractive destination for visitors.

3. Spiti River, Himachal Pradesh

Rafting along the winding Spiti river nestled in the state of Himachal Pradesh is an extremely fun experience where you could spend as much as six days on the water. The scenery offers glimpses of local villages, foliage, as well as snow-covered glaciers. The rafting starts from the Tuting region and covers Pasighat with the endpoint being Sumdo. It covers a total of 180 km. The best time to visit is in the months of July and August. River rafting in the Spiti spin river will be an immense adventure for adventure lovers. The view of the surroundings is spectacular. The river is enveloped by Kullu Valley in the south, Ladakh in the north, and Tibet in the east.

Timings for River Rafting in Spiti’s spin river is from 9:00am to 5:00pm during the months of January to June and September to December.

4. Barapole River at Coorg

The Barapole river is a turbulent river that originates from the Kithu Kakathu river further extending to Brahmagiri hills to the Arabian Sea. It is 78 km from Coorg. White water rafting is one recreational activity that Barapole river is famous for and is considered one of the most challenging rafting experiences in South India. This stretch of the river has more than nine class 2 and class 4 rapids. The rapids have some fascinating names like Morning Coffee, Grass Hopper, Ramba Samba, Wicked Witch, and Big Bang. The real length of this run is between 3 – 4 km and the whole rafting session keeps going around 3 hours. River rafting takes place in Barapole almost throughout the year. The adventure and thrill of white water rafting is not just limited to Northern India. Some unusual quirky names given to these rapids are- Morning Coffee, Big Bang, The Ramba Samba, The Wicked Witch, Milky Churn, and Grasshopper. The rafting season starts from the monsoon months and runs till post-monsoon time (July to September).

5. Dandeli River, Karnataka

The river rafting in Dandeli is a more recent phenomenon, but just as exciting and fun as the others on the list. It offers a winding path along the Western Ghats on the swiftly flowing Kali river. It is one of the best locations for white water river rafting in South India. It flows at an altitude of over 1200 km, and gives an exhilarating ride downstream, amidst a variety of flora and fauna. For most tourists, it is a perfect and favorite weekend destination that offers them a break from their daily hectic schedule. Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary, Kali River, Kavala Caves, Syntheri Rock, Shiroli Peak and the Anshi National Park are some of the major attractions over here. One can also choose to visit Dandeli for rafting in the months between February and May. This is the time when the forests are dry and the trees are starting to shed their leaves. Throughout the year Dandeli is famous for one thing – white water rafting. The best time to raft here is in between the months of November to June.
